Ramos and Ronaldo celebrate a Real Madrid goal with Zidane.

Real Madrid are virtually through to the quarterfinals of the Champions League after a 2-0 away win against Roma. The scoreline doesn’t do justice to Roma’s efforts who were able to contain the visitors for better parts of the game.

With two away goals in their kitty, the return leg at Bernabeu should be a mere formality. Goals from Cristiano Ronaldo and Jese Rodriguez saw Zinedine Zidane record a victory in his first Champions League match as coach. Incidentally, Zidnae’s first Champions League match as a player was also against Roma.

Qualifying for the quarterfinals will ensure that Madrid end their 29-year curse of not being able to beat an Italian side over two-legs in European competitions.

The second leg will be played at the Bernabeu on 9th March,
