What a difference one year makes, just ask Leicester City!

On April 3, 2015 Leicester City were bottom of the Premier League table, seven points from safety. On April 3, 2016 Leicester City are top of the Premier league table, seven points ahead of their nearest challengers Tottenham. In the space of one year, they have played 41 games, winning 27, drawing 10 and losing just four. It’s fair to say it has been an absolutely exceptional 12 months for the Foxes.

Their most recent victory came in a 1-0 triumph (again!) at home to Southampton. For a while it seemed, rather cynically, that the referees were pushing Leicester towards the title as well. Two clear-cut penalties for handballs by Danny Simpson and Robert Huth were not given, which left Saints manager Ronald Koeman furious. Had either of those decisions gone Southampton’s way, Leicester would have found it extremely difficult to hold on to their Wes Morgan-inspired lead.

Conspiracy theories apart, Leicester need four wins out of their remaining six games to guarantee winning the Premier League crown for the first time. Their remaining fixtures are against Sunderland, West Ham, Swansea, Manchester United, Everton and Chelsea. Two of those are certain victories and Leicester should also manage to beat West Ham and Everton. Chelsea are likely to have nothing to play for come the end of the season which leaves the tie against Manchester United as the fixture where they could claim the title. How ironic would it be if Claudio Ranieri lifts the Premier league title at Chelsea’s Stamford Bridge – a club that sacked him for not being fashionable enough more than a decade ago.

Except fans of Tottenham, Arsenal and Manchester City, the entire footballing world is rallying behind Leicester’s title run. Week-by-week the dream gets nearer. Leicester will hope that none of the dreamers wake up any time soon.
