Watford have signed winger Nordin Amrabat on a three-and-a-half-year contract from Malaga, but are still eyeing Tottenham winger Andros Townsend.

The 28-year-old Morocco international will be available to play for Quique Sanchez Flores’ squad on the weekend against Newcastle United.

“He has the qualities of the players we like,” Sanchez Flores said of the player earlier this week.

“He can play at number 10, he holds the ball, he can turn quickly with the strength of a striker and escape the defensive line.

“He can also play as a winger because he has that pace and velocity – the power that adds to the options of a team.”

Amrabat was pulled out of Malaga’s squad which lost 2-1 at Sevilla on the weekend after Watford agreed to meet his £6m buy-out clause.

Amrabat initially arrived at the Spanish side on loan from Turkish giants Galatasaray before signing on a permanent basis in April 2015.

However the winger, who has also played for Kayserispor, PSV, Omniworld and VVV-Venlo, has now left Spain for England.

Meanwhile, Watford still want to sign Townsend though face strong competition from Newcastle who have had a £10.5 million offer rejected and intend to return with an improved bid.

Townsend, however, would prefer to go out on loan and settle his future in the summer. Watford hope that gives them an edge over Newcastle at this stage.
