Sri Lanka vs West Indies: 1st Cricket ODI – Prediction Recap

What did we say?

“Even if West Indies have a steady start, they may not keep it going. Sri Lanka have an opportunity to make a comeback and win this game if rain permits.”

What happened?

In spite of a brief destructive spell by West Indies all-rounder Sunil Narine (he took 3 wickets in 1 over) Sri Lanka survived the late West Indies onslaught to win the this cricket match by one single wicket – a nail-biting finish for the neutral and staunch supporter alike.

Ajantha Mendis kept his calm to score an unbeaten 21, even as his team-mates kept heading back to the pavilion.

At the start of the match, before the rain started, i.e. while it was still a full 50-over match, Suranga Lakmal had reduced West Indies to 29 for 3 with five disciplined overs. The rains came after 14.2 overs and, upon resumption, West Indies went in for all-out aggression. Russell and Bravo put on a 58-run stand, but the wickets did eventually begin to flow again for Sri Lanka. Holder’s batting explosion gave West Indies a chance and pushed their final total to 159.

However, Sri Lanka too started well with their batting, going 104 for 2 in the 13th over, before Narine’s blitzkrieg took place.

All in all, our prediction could not have been more accurate, even taking into the account the role played by the rain.
