Madrid, City, PSG in Champions League action

cr7Match Day 5 of the UEFA Champions League continues on Wednesday night, and there are some mouth-watering clashes awaiting the football world.

FC Shakhtar Donetsk vs Real Madrid FC
Mircea Lucescu’s Shakhtar side will host an upset Real Madrid team at Arean Lviv on Wednesday night. Though Madrid have almost ensured progression into the final 16, they will be eager to put on a show that would erase memories of their dismal performance against Barcelona on Saturday night at Nou Camp.

Shakhtar are currently top of the Ukrainian league and come to the fixture after a stimulating 4-0 win again Volyn. Their Champions League future is not in their hands, though, as even 2 wins in the next 2 games will leave their progression depending on other matches. However, it is obvious that they will try to heap more misery on a demoralised Madrid team.

Madrid’s defence was brilliantly dismantled by Barcelona, and Real have no one else than themselves to blame. But they will make sure to rebound with a commanding win and ensure progression. Cristiano Ronaldo drew some flak for his poor form in recent weeks and he will hope to write his critics off.

Both teams have a full squad to select from.

Juventus FC vs Manchester City
Last year’s runner up Juventus will play group toppers Manchester City in what could be a stirring match. City are in good form, except the last EPL game – which they lost 0-4 to Liverpool – both in domestic and European leagues and will look to continue their run.

Meanwhile, Juventus seem to have lost the charisma they showed last season. ‘The old lady of Turin’ has been a shadow of her 2014 self. Juventus stand 6th in the league. While attacking has not been a problem for them, with Morata and Dybala scoring 17 goals in 13 games, defense is a worry, leaking 11 goals, which sums up their campaign so far. In the Champions League, however, Juventus are a stone’s throw away from qualifying to the round of 16 and will a positive result will kickstart their domestic campaign as well.

Manchester City, on the other hand, have had tremendous impact in their group, but their league run has struck a wall, as their last two games ended in a draw and a humiliating defeat to rejuvenated Liverpool. It is up to City to recover from two disappointing results and qualify to the knockout stages for the first time in the club’s history.

Malmo FF vs Paris SG
Zlatan Ibrahimovic will return to his old hunting ground, where he played at the start of his career between 1999 and 2001. But his meeting with his old team may not necessarily result in a friendly game, as Malmo, sitting at the bottom of the table, will look to salvage some pride.

Paris SG are unbeaten in their league, and their only loss this season came against Real Madrid. Angel Di Maria, Zlatan and Trapper are in sensational form, which they hope will continue in this game, too, to ensure qualification.

The return of Zlatan to his boyhood club will stir the fans and a full house is expected at Swedbank Stadion in Malmo. Though a win for Malmo is unlikely, it is predicted to be a spirited exhibition as the home team will try to impress their idol, Zlatan.
