ITALY vs SPAIN – EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIP 2016 (ROUND OF 16)

ITALY vs SPAIN HEAD-TO-HEAD

Italy and Spain are set to meet for the fourth time in the last three European Championships & the sixth time overall, making Italy vs Spain the most played fixture at the Euros.

Italy last won a competitive match against Spain during the 1994 World Cup, beating them 2-1 in the quarter-finals.

Present Italy coach Antonio Conte was in the Italian starting XI for the match against Spain at the 1994 World Cup.

Since that win, Italy have won just one of eleven matches played between the teams. They lost 4 & drew 6 (2 matches that went into penalties have been considered as draws).

ITALY

The loss against Republic of Ireland was Italy’s first in 13 competitive matches under Antonio Conte – 9 wins & 3 draws.

In three of their last 4 knock-out games at the Euros, Italy have failed to score, barring the 2-1 win over Germany in the Euro 2012 semi-finals.

Only two Italian players have started all their Euro 2016 games so far – Leonardo Bonucci and Andrea Barzagli.

The Italians used 22 players during the group stages of Euro 2016 – the highest for any side in the tournament.

In 36 matches at European Championships, Italy have never been able to score more than two goals in a game.

A loss today would see Italy suffer successive defeats at the European Championships for the first time.

SPAIN

Spain have lost three of their last six matches at the World Cup & the European Championships – prior to this they had lost three matches in their previous 31 major tournament games.

Sergio Ramos has failed to score from any of his 48 shots at the World Cup & European Championships.

Only Fernando Torres (5) & David Villa (4) have more European Championship goals for Spain than Alvaro Morata (3).
