India in FIH Champions Trophy 2016

FIH Champions Trophy 2016
  1. The Indian selection committee has decided to rest skipper Sardara Singh & drag flicker Rupinder Pal Singh ( prior to Rio Olympics) for the FIH Champions Trophy 2016.
  2. It will be India’s last tournament before the Rio Olympics.
  3. PR Sreejesh is named as the skipper & SV Sunil will be his deputy. The team also includes seasoned players like VR Reghunath, Kothajit Singh, SK Uthappa & Akashdeep Singh.
  4. Harmanpreet Singh, who played a pivotal role in India’s silver medal winning run in the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup, has retained his spot in the squad.
  5. The2016 champions trophy will be the 36th edition for men. It will be held between 10 and 17 June 2016 in London.  India’s first match will be against the defending champions Germany.
  6. India has never won the Champions Trophy. Australia leads the count with 13 times followed by Germany (10), Holland (8), Pakistan (3) & Spain (1).
  7. Earlier Argentina was supposed to host the event, since they were unable to fulfil their contractual obligations in regards to television rights, sponsorship and the hosting of events, FIH announced London as the venue just 2 months prior to the event.
  8. India & Belgium qualified for the tournament through invitations from the FIH executive board. Qualification for the rest is as follows – Great Britain (host nation), Germany ( Champions -2012 Olympics), Australia ( World Champions), South Korea ( winner of 2014 Champions Challenge).
