If it were any other season, Tottenham would ‘deserve’ to win the League

You would think that if you had scored the most goals and conceded the fewest with five games to go in the English Premier League season, you would be top of the table, and in prime position to win the League title. Well, you would be wrong and if you don’t believe us, just ask Tottenham Hotspur.

Tottenham have scored 60 goals and conceded just 25 this season, the highest and lowest respectively. Yet, with five games to go, Spurs find themselves seven points off leaders Leicester City, with nary a chance of claiming their maiden Premier League title.

Only six teams have boasted the best strike force and meanest defence in the same season before. Five of them have gone on to win the title with the only exception being Manchester United in 1998, who lost out to Arsenal by a solitary point. It doesn’t look like it will be that close this time though, with everyone (including referees, by the looks of it!) willing Leicester to a dream Premier league title.

Tottenham therefore, are likely to finish in second place, not an embarrassment by any means. It would mean guaranteed Champions League football next season, something Spurs fans have been looking forward to since Gareth Bale’s (then Spurs) demolition of Maicon (then Inter Milan) many seasons ago. Additionally they will finish above Arsenal, their fierce North London rivals, for the first time in over 20 years.

Crucially for Tottenham though, their era of dominance could just be beginning. While it is difficult to see Leicester keeping hold of their key players (Jamie Vardy, Riyad Mahrez, N’Golo Kante) next season, the same cannot be said of Tottenham. None of Harry Kane, Dele Ali, Christian Eriksen or Hugo Lloris are likely to be tempted away and a London-based Champions League club could prove an attractive proposition to players from the continent as well, especially considering Tottenham are not shy of spending big bucks.
