Hammering home a point, or three – West Ham host Chelsea – Our Prediction

Prediction: No clear favourites. The first half may belong to West Ham, but Chelsea will come back strongly. Just one goal may be the difference to an otherwise tie. We consider West Ham to have a slightly  better chance of winning.

Over the years, debating the outcome of a West Ham-Chelsea encounter has become an exercise in futility, with Chelsea being the overwhelming favourites. But there’s something in the English air this season – the grass on the pitch is slightly greener, the skies have been just a little extra overcast, the football has swerved just a little bit more. Whatever the reason, something is happening that has not been seen for quite some time in the self-proclaimed “best league in the world”.

It’s Matchweek 10 in the Barclays Premier League. West Ham are 4th on the table. Last year’s champions, Chelsea, are 12th, 6 points behind.

That just about sums up the first quarter of the 2015-16 season.

Last week, West Ham ran London club Crystal Palace ragged in a 3-1 win, and now will look to inflict the same punishment on Chelsea, another London outfit.

And based on recent form and an impressive record – they have already defeated Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester City – Slaven Bilic’s side are strange odds-on favourites to scalp yet another of the Big 5. But they will be without the talismanic Victor Moses and defender Winston Reid, whose absence may be crucial to the outcome of the game.

On the other hand, Chelsea have managed a little revival of their own. They beat Aston Villa last weekend and followed it up with a clean sheet against Dynamo Kiev in the midweek Champions League clash. Another advantage is that Diego Costa is scoring again. However, with doubts over the availability of Eden Hazard, the midfield remains a worry for Jose Mourinho, and he will be desperate that the likes of Oscar, Willian and Cesc Fabregas live up to their billing.

In the end, the fact remains that West Ham, a team which has scored 20 goals so far, are going up against Chelsea, who have conceded 17 already.

Ron Weasley from the magical world of Harry Potter was once spied prodding a West Ham poster trying to bring the players in the picture to life. And we predict that fans at Upton Park will witness that little bit of magic, and see their beloved players overcome a determined Chelsea to take West Ham home.
