England vs Sri Lanka, 2nd Test – Preview

Sri Lanka’s tour of England started on a disastrous note with an innings defeat in the first test. Bowling first, the Lankans did well to restrict England to 298 in the first innings. Their batting though failed them as James Anderson and Stuart Broad with 5 & 4 wickets respectively, bundled the visitors for 91 in the first innings. Put into follow on, the Lankans were bowled out for 119. Anderson finished with 10 wickets in the match.

Ahead of the second test, Sri Lanka are faced with injury problems. Young pacer Dushmantha Chameera has been ruled out of the tour with a back injury, further depleting the squad which is low on morale.

England had a lot of positives to take away from the first test. Jonny Bairstow’s century and Alex Hales innings up the order helped them to a respectable total which in the end proved too much for the Lankans. The English bowlers perhaps had a more impressive outing needing just 433 deliveries to snap 20 wickets.

It’s a test of character for Sri Lanka, but it might just be a case of no respite for them in the second test.

  • Alastair Cook needs 20 more to 12th man & the 1st Englishman to 10,000 test runs. He will also be the fastest to reach this milestone and has a five-month cushion on Sachin Tendulkar, the previous youngest.
  • Rangana Herath is one wicket away from 300 test wickets. He will be the third Sri Lankan to reach this milestone.
  • Sri Lanka will become only the fifth different team to play a Test at Chester-le-Street. Zimbabwe, Bangladesh, West Indies (twice) and Australia have played there before.
  • England have won three of their previous five matches at Chester-le-Street by an innings.
