ENGLAND vs SRI LANKA – 2nd ODI PREVIEW

After the drama of a tie in the first ODI, focus shifts to Edgbaston as England and Sri Lanka gear up for the second ODI. Injuries continue to haunt the Lankans & this time it’s captain Angelo Matthews who picked up a hamstring injury at Trent Bridge. Matthews has been further assessed since the injury but is yet to get the clean chit ahead of the second ODI.

For England the concerns are bigger. You have to admire the spirit Jos Buttler & Chris Woakes showed in the tied ODI, but the rest of their players were far from convincing! Morgan rightly admitted after the match that his team were lucky to have escaped with a tie. What’s shocking is how easily England plummeted into a crisis situation! The depth in their batting came as a saviour after their early collapse.

Sri Lanka were the better of the sides and will feel undone by the result of the 1st ODI. They’ve carried their momentum from the victories over Ireland and showed that the ODI series against England will be nothing like the Tests. Matthews is one man the Lankans can’t do without & a lot will depend on his inclusion / omission from the game.

England have the task of sorting their top order issues, while the Lankans will hope to finish off better than they did it in the series opener.
