ENGLAND vs SRI LANKA – 1st ODI PREVIEW

After a lacklustre showing in the tests against England, Sri Lanka will hope to restore pride with a solid performance in the ODIs. While they were outplayed in the first two tests, the Lankans did put up a fight during the third and final test at Lord’s. Their back-to-back ODI victories over Ireland serve as reassurance that the visitors have acclimatised to the foreign conditions the United Kingdom presents & will be ready to fight England’s fire with their own.

England have been focused in their approach and dominated the visitors in the longer format of the game. But the Lord’s test & Sri Lanka’s victories over Ireland in Dublin has given them enough reason to not be over-assured of themselves ahead of the ODIs. England will be buoyed by Jos Buttler’s presence & will hope that Jonny Bairstow carries his form from the tests to the ODIs. Ben Stokes’ absence is a chink, but they are equipped with options to replace him ably.

Sri Lanka have had a few injury concerns during this tour & it doesn’t seem to stop there. After Dhammika Prasad and Dushmantha Chameera being ruled out of the tour, pacer Shaminda Eranga has been pulled by the ICC for his bowling action & will not be able to play until cleared. Eranga was also hospitalised, while in Ireland, for irregular heartbeat.

While it’s not going to be very easy for England, a lot will depend on how well Sri Lanka deal with the injuries & suspensions.
