Dinesh Karthik, the worst keeper among IPL teams

Dinesh Karthik made his Test and ODI debuts in 2004 and T20I debut in 2006. Since then he has time and again attempted to prove why India were lucky to find a talent as exquisite as MS Dhoni. It is now staggering to think that Dinesh Karthik was once primed to be India’s No.1 wicket-keeper for a decade or more.

Karthik has now taken his ‘talents’ to Gujarat Lions, and in just two games he has earned the wrath of his teammates and fans when he dons the gloves.

In Gujarat’s first match against Kings XI Punjab, Karthik missed an opportunity to run out Manan Vohra, was too late in stumping Murali Vijay, and was unable to properly gather numerous throws from fielders, a pre-requisite for any half decent keeper. Karthik though redeemed himself with the bat, contributing a fast-paced 41 as Gujarat won the match.

With the gloves though, Karthik was even worse in the second match against Rising Pune Supergiants than the first. There were three instances when his teammate Ravindra Jadeja fired a throw in at the keeper, and Karthik couldn’t collect cleanly. In the third instance there was a chance to run opposing skipper Dhoni out, but as per type Karthik failed to do so. While it’s true that Jadeja has a rocket-arm, Karthik’s fallacies were there for all to see. Karthik didn’t bat – possibly demoted for his horrendous showing with the gloves – and couldn’t redeem himself this time around. Maybe Gujarat have already decided to hand the gloves to Brendon McCullum and rid themselves of Karthik – hence his demotion in the batting order.

Social Media reactions to Karthik’s performance ranged from anger and comic amusement to wondering how he manages to secure a franchise every season.

The keepers of the other seven IPL sides are MS Dhoni, Jos Buttler, Robin Uthappa, Wriddhiman Saha, Kedar Jadhav, Naman Ojha and Quinton de Kock. Dinesh Karthik is clearly the bottom of this pile and may be a hindrance in Gujarat Lions’ triumphant start.
