India vs New Zealand, World Cup T20, Nagpur – Cricket Preview

The business end of the 5th edition of ICC World T20 starts with hosts India taking on New Zealand in a Group 2 match at the VCA Stadium in Nagpur. India’s form heading into the tournament has earned them the billing of favourites and New Zealand start a new era in the absence of former captain Brendon McCullum, who retired from all forms of the game in February.

India’s T20 form has been impeccable since the start of the year – a 3-0 whitewash of Australia in Australia, 2-1 series victory against Sri Lanka at home and a six successive wins to clinch the Asia Cup. Expectations in India are always high and when the World Cup is at home, there is only one thing expected off the team – win. In the first of the two warm-up games ahead of the tournament, India beat West Indies in Kolkata and sent out a warning to other participating teams. The second game didn’t go the way captain MS Dhoni would have liked and the Men in Blue were beaten by South Africa.

New Zealand have always fallen short in the World T20 and to an extent that they have never gone beyond the group stages. The Blackcaps have only won 11 of the 25 T20Is they’ve played – only Zimbabwe and Bangladesh are the full ICC members with fewer victories. With Kane Williamson at the helm, New Zealand will look to turn things around in the tournament.

India certainly are favourites and if you ask the experts, the predictions would all be against New Zealand, but playing against odds is what makes team great and New Zealand have no reason not to fancy themselves to cause an upset in the opener.
