Manchester United travel to the Volkswagen Arena to take on Wolfsburg in their last Champions League group fixture as they look to seal a place in the last sixteen of the competition.

Although Wolfsburg and United are currently placed first and second respectively in Group B, they are still yet to book a place in the last sixteen of the Champions League.

While a draw will be sufficient to see the German side through to the next round, things are a little more difficult for United, who need to beat Wolfsburg to guarantee themselves a place in the in the last sixteen of the competition.

Overview

Manchester United

Despite losing only one game in the Champions League so far, the Red Devils, who recorded a 7-1 (aggregate) win over Belgian side Club Brugge in the playoffs of the competition, have been pretty mediocre in the group stages, recording two wins, two draws and a defeat.

After suffering a 2-1 defeat against Dutch side PSV Eindhoven in their first Champions League game, United made a good comeback to beat Wolfsburg 2-1. Then they went on to record a 1-1 draw at CSKA Moscow, before beating the Russian side 1-0 in the reverse fixture at Old Trafford.

United would have secured their place in the last sixteen of the competition, had they beaten PSV in their last group game. However, as they were only able to take a point from that game, the Red Devils will now need to record a win in their final group fixture, if they want to guarantee themselves a place in the round of sixteen.

Louis van Gaal’s side currently have a total of eight points from five games, while Wolfsburg, PSV and CSKA Moscow have nine, seven and four points respectively.

If United fail to beat Wolfsburg on Tuesday then their progress to the last sixteen of the Champions League will be dependent on how PSV fare in their last group game against CSKA Moscow.

If PSV were to lose their last group fixture against CSKA Moscow, then Manchester United will go to the next round even if they lose to Wolfsburg on Tuesday. If the Dutch side record a draw against the Russian team, then a point against Wolfsburg will also be sufficient to see the Red Devils through to the last sixteen. However, if PSV were to beat CSKA Moscow then United will need to take three points from their final fixture to progress to the next round of the competition.

The Red Devils, who did not participate in Europe last season after finishing seventh in the Premier League in 2013/14, will definitely be looking for a win in Germany, so that their Champions League progress will not be dependent on the PSV vs CSKA Moscow result.

Wolfsburg

Wolfsburg, on the other hand, need to only record a draw in their last group game against Manchester United to ensure their progress in the Champions League.

The German side, who have returned to the Champions League for the first time since 2008/09, have done well in the group stages so far, despite them suffering two defeats against Manchester United and PSV.

After starting off their 2015/16 Champions League campaign with a narrow 1-0 win over CSKA Moscow, Wolfsburg were beaten 2-1 by Manchester United. Dieter Hecking’s men then beat PSV 2-0, before suffering a defeat (by the same margin) against the Dutch side in the reverse fixture. Finally, they all but guaranteed their place in the last sixteen by beating CSKA Moscow in the reverse fixture.

Although Wolfsburg only need a point from their final group game to seal a place in the next round of the European competition, the German side will be looking to take their revenge on Manchester United, who narrowly beat them in the reverse fixture at Old Trafford.

 Expected Lineups:

Wolfsburg: Benaglio; Träsch, Naldo, Dante, R Rodríguez; Arnold, Luiz Gustavo; Vierinha, Draxler, Caligiuri; Dost

Manchester United: De Gea; McNair, Smalling, Blind; Young, Carrick, Schweinsteiger, Mata, Darmian; Depay, Martial
