Benfica vs Zenit, Estádio da Luz – Champions League Round of 16  Preview

Russian Champions Zenit St Petersburg travel to Lisbon to face Benfica in the first leg of their Champions League Round of 16 clash which will also be their first competitive match of 2016. Zenit return to competitive football after a two-month Russian winter break. Their last competitive match was the 2-1 loss to Gent in the final group-stage match of the Champions League.
Currently at 2nd in the Liga NOS standings, hosts Benfica were beaten 1-2 by Porto on Friday, ending their 11-match winning streak. The Portuguese side though head into the game with valuable competitive match practice unlike the visitors, who haven’t played since December 9, 2015. Zenit are also struggling in the Russian Premier League where they are 6th in the table, 7 points adrift of league leaders CSKA Moscow.
A quarter-final spot has always eluded the Russians and Andre Villa Baos will hope to be the first coach to have earned them one. Benfica on the other hand will hope to advance to the final 8 for the first time in 4 years.
Zenit hold the head-to-head advantage having beaten Benfica thrice & lost only once in their four previous meetings. That’s one record the Benfica side will be eager to set straight.
