Champions League: Chelsea vs Porto – Prediction

[box type=”shadow” align=”alignleft” class=”” width=””]Prediction: FC Porto may not be able to stand in front of Chelsea in this game. They look far better. Something that has become a rarity for Chelsea this season. At its worst, Porto can manage a Draw with an otherwise, far stronger, Chelsea. [/box]

Chelsea and Porto come face to face in their last Champions League group fixture as both sides look to seal a place in the last sixteen of the competition.

After a very successful campaign in 2014/15 that ended with Chelsea being crowned as the English champions as well as the Capital One Cup winners, the Blues’ form has seen a drastic drop this season, with Jose Mourinho’s men currently hovering just above the relegation zone in the Premier League.

It has been the same story in the Capital One Cup as well, with Chelsea already getting knocked out, following their defeat to Stoke City (on penalties) in the fourth round of the competition.

Despite their dismal domestic form, Chelsea have done pretty well in the Champions League, recording three wins, a draw and a defeat so far. However, the West London side still need  a point from their final group game against Porto if they are to guarantee themselves a place in the next round of the competition.

This is because Chelsea currently have the same points (10) as Porto, and Dynamo Kyiv are only a couple of points behind the two teams. So if the Blues were to lose their final group fixture against Porto, and Dynamo Kyiv were to win theirs against Maccabi Tel Aviv, Chelsea will not qualify for the knockout stages of the competition.

However, a draw in their last group fixture would be sufficient to see them through to the next round, due to them having better goal differences than both Porto and Dynamo Kyiv.

Still the Blues will be eager to beat Porto and take their revenge on the Portuguese side for narrowly beating them in the reverse fixture at the Estádio do Dragão.

Porto, meanwhile, will be looking to take advantage of Chelsea’s current form and win this game as a draw would not be sufficent for them to progress, if Dynamo Kyiv manage to beat Maccabi Tel Aviv (which they probably will) in their last Champions League group fixture.

The Portuguese side, who have been pretty impressive in the Champions League this season, would have already sealed their place in the last sixteen of the competition, had they managed to beat Dynamo Kyiv in their previous fixture.

However, an unexpected 2-0 home defeat against the Ukrainian side in their previous fixture means that Porto will now need to take all three points from their last group game, if they want to progress to the last sixteen.

Taking three points at Stamford Bridge with Jose Mourinho as the manager of Chelsea would have seemed close to impossible just a season ago. But things have drastically changed at Chelsea this season, with almost every Tom, Dick and Harry beating the Blues in their own backyard.

Still, Porto will probably be taking a cautious approach to this game as Chelsea do have to quality to win or at least take a point from this fixture.

Expected Lineups:

Chelsea: Courtois; Ivanović, Zouma, Cahill, Azpilicueta; Matić, Fàbregas, Ramires, Hazard; Oscar, Costa.

Porto: Casillas; Maxi Pereira, Marcano, Maicon, Layún; Danilo, Rúben Neves, Herrera; André André, Brahimi, Aboubakar.
