Champions League: Olympiacos vs Arsenal – Prediction

[box type=”shadow” align=”alignleft” class=”” width=””]Prediction: Though olympiacos FC doesn’t have many fans outside Greece, they have shaken Arsenal before. Looks like, this game will have constant ups & downs where we believe that a tie can be disturbed by Olympiacos to turn the game in its favour. Arsenal will have to be extremely careful. Considering both teams to be equal favourites to win this game, we rely on the less popular Olympiacos FC.[/box]

Arsenal and Olympiacos take on each other at the Georgios Karaiskakis Stadium in Greece as both sides look to progress to the last sixteen of the competition.

While the Greek side only need a point from this game to ensure their progress in the Champions League, it is a “do or die” situation for the Gunners, who will not qualify for the knockout phases, unless they manage a win on Wednesday.

Despite being impressive in the Premier League (where they are currently in second place, two points behind leaders Leicester City) this season, the Gunners’ Champions League form has been just the opposite, with them struggling against considerably weaker teams like Dinamo Zagreb and Olympiacos.

The Gunners suffered a shock 1-2 defeat at Dinamo Zagreb in their opening Champions League fixture, and this was followed by another 2-3 home loss against Olympiacos. Arsene Wenger’s side did well to beat Bayern Munich 2-0 in their next game, but they suffered a humiliating 1-5 thumping in the reverse fixture at the Allianz Arena.

The North London side improved their chances of progressing to the next round of the European competition, following a comfortable 3-0 victory over Dinamo Zagreb at the Emirates. And now the Gunners, who are currently third in their group, three points behind the second placed Olympiacos, will have to register a win on Wednesday, if they want to book a place in the next round of the competition.

The Gunners will be a little heartened by the fact that their boss Arsene Wenger has successfully managed guide them to the second round of the Champions League for the last 14 seasons.

However, they will need to work hard against Olympiakos, who will probably be looking frustrate the Gunners by staying behind and defending deep.

The Greek side, who were eliminated from the group stages of the Champions League last season, have a very good opportunity to progress to the knockout stages of the European competition this time around, with them only requiring a draw in their last fixture against Arsenal on Wednesday.

Apart from their defeats to Bayern Munich (in both the home and away fixture), Olympiacos have done pretty well in the group stages, recording wins in all their other games. They managed to do the double over Dinamo Zagreb, and record a 3-2 victory over Arsenal at the Emirates.

Considering the fact that they have already managed to get a win at Arsenal, Olympiacos should be pretty confident of beating or at least recoding a draw against the Gunners at home on Wednesday.

However, Marco Silva’s side will be taking nothing for granted as Arsenal are an excellent side, who have enough quality to beat the best of sides, when in form.

Expected Lineups

Olympiacos: Roberto; Elabdellaoui, Botía, Siovas, Masuaku; Milivojević, Kasami; Sebá, Fortounis, Pardo; Ideye.

Arsenal: Čech; Bellerín, Mertesacker, Koscielny, Monreal; Flamini, Ramsey; Campbell, Özil, Oxlade-Chamberlain; Giroud.
