Can Dravid Inspire Daredevils?

They promised a lot in the first 2 seasons of the IPL, making the semis on both occasions. But since, the Delhi Daredevils have only withered away in their challenge – a team chopped and changed many times, devoid of a true superstar, devoid of a philosophy that makes them unique in the way they play their cricket.

Coming in to IPL-9, the capital side this time bear yet another revamped look, largely assembled with the Rajasthan Royals’ core group. With Rahul Dravid and Paddy Upton at the helm for the Daredevils replacing Gary Kirsten, the duo went about acquiring the Royals’ star youngsters in Chris Morris, Sanju Samson and Karun Nair for top dollar.

“We wanted young, fearless cricketers who we could work on. We have got Sanju Samson, Karun Nair, Pawan Negi, Shreyas Iyer and Rishabh Pant, and it’s an advantage that they have all worked with Rahul Dravid, who knows the Indian boys very well. We are looking forward to changing the fortunes of Delhi with the help of the new coaching staff and some talented youngsters,” said TA Sekar, Director of GMR Sports who own the Delhi Daredevils.

A big question mark remains over the fact that veteran Zaheer Khan has been entrusted with the captain’s responsibilities. The 37 year-old pacer who retired from international cricket over 2 years ago will have to marshal his young side and lead from the front.

While Sanju Samson will be pivotal with the bat, a lot will rest on the young shoulders of Shreyas Iyer and Karun Nair. Quinton De Kock and JP Duminy too will have a huge role to play if the Daredevils are to make a big impact this time around. While De Kock or Samson could don the wicketkeeper’s gloves, Duminy will be useful with ball in hand as well.

Carlos Brathwaite has etched his name in T20 folklore with his title clinching knock versus England, smashing 4 sixes in 4 balls to give the Windies their 2nd world title. Now, the Daredevils will be hoping for similar inspiration when the big-hitting all-rounder dons the Delhi colours.

With Zaheer Khan leading the attack with the ball, the likes of Pawan Negi who was bought for a whopping Rs 8.5 crore will hold the key. South African Chris Morris who has played for Rajasthan Royals and Chennai Super Kings in the past will look to use his pace and experience to his advantage. Clearly, Zak and Dravid have a huge task on their hands to lead this young and vibrant side- who will have to do exceeding well for a top-4 finish in IPL-9.
