With only days to go for the 2016 edition of the Summer Olympics, here are a few things you show know about the games:
1. Rio 2016 is the first Olympic Games to be hosted by a South American city.

2. 10,500 athletes from 206 countries will compete across 42 sports at the 2016 Olympic games.

3. 4,924 medals will be awarded to athletes over 17 days of action.

4. 140,000 people will be involved in hosting the 2016 Summer Olympics – 90,000 employees & 50,000 volunteers.

5. The opening & closing ceremonies will be held at Rio’s iconic Maracana Stadium.

6. The most of the 2016 Summer Olympics is ‘Vinicius’, a yellow & blue creature that represents Brazil’s wildlife.

7. The 2016 Olympic games also marks the inclusion of a first-ever Refugee Olympic Team where athletes forced to flee their countries will compete under the Olympic flag.

8. Close to 20,000 members of the international media are expected to cover the events of Rio 2016 globally.

9. Golf & rugby (in the sevens format) return to the Olympics at Rio 2016 after 112 year & 92 years respectively.

10. Over 60,000 meals will served daily to feed the competing athletes.

11. Close to 85,000 soldiers & policemen will be deployed during the event, making it the largest security force assembled for event in Brazil and twice as large as the security for London 2012.

12. About 4500 urine & 1000 blood anti-doping tests will be conducted in Rio under the supervision of over 200 doping control officers.

13. The sanctions for the doping cases at the 2016 summer Olympics will be Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS)

14. Brazil’s football sensation Neymar is the most followed athlete on social media to be at Rio 2016.

15. In terms of viewership, The International Olympic Committee expects approximately 3.6 billion global viewers, of whom more than 3 billion are expected to be on an additional ‘second-screen’ device.

16. Post the Olympic Games
a. the handball venue will be converted into four schools
b. the aquatics stadium will be converted into two public water sports facilities
c. the Olympic Park will be turned into a new GEO (Olympic) school
