Romelu Lukaku’s 19th goal of the season gave Everton a vital advantage going into the second leg of their Carling Cup semifinal against Manchester City. The striker scored the winner 12 minutes from time to give Everton a 2-1 victory at Goodison Park.

The goal came two minutes after Manchester City looked like they had done enough to secure a draw when Jesus Navas finished a flowing counter-attacking move that involved some brilliant work by Sergio Aguero.

That equaliser came after Everton had opened the scoring at the stroke of half time, when Funes Mori was quick to react after Willy Carballero blocked Ross Barkley’s effort on goal.

Manchester City rue bad luck

Everton had two goals ruled out for offside, one each from John Stones and Romelu Lukaku. The latter again offside when Mori scored just before the first period ended. While the striker neither made a movement towards the ball not did he touch it, he did appear to be standing in City keeper’s line of vision. And this is what the visitors protested, but referee Robert Madley waved the players away, letting the goal stand.

City manager Manuel Pellegrini will also feel hard done by for not getting a penalty when Navas was upended in the box by a Kevin Mirallas challenge.

“Everton’s first goal was absolutely offside and it was a clear penalty when Jesus Navas was fouled,” Pellegrini said. “I didn’t speak to the referee after the game – they were both clear.

“To lose 2-1 is a bad result but it just means we have to win 1-0 at home. I still think we are able to play in the Capital One Cup final.”
