England played USSR twice at the European Championships with each team winning a match

Post the breakup of the Soviet Union, England played Russia twice. This was in the Euro 2008 qualifiers with the teams again winning a match each

This is England’s 9th appearance at the European Championships

England qualified for Euro 2016 as the only team to have won all their qualifying matches.

England’s last defeat in the European Championships, excluding penalty shoot-outs, was in a qualifying match against Croatia in 2007.

RUSSIA

Russia (including Soviet Union) have made 11 appearances at the European Championships, winning the inaugural tournament in 1960 and finishing runners-up on three other occasions – 1964, 1972 & 1988

In their last 15 matches at the European Championships, Russia have managed only one clean sheet.

Artem Dzyuba played a part in 50% of Russia’s qualifying goals – scored 8, assisted 1.

Leonid Slutsky, aged 45, is the youngest manager/coach at Euro 2016. This is also his first major tournament as an international coach.
